Coach Vukorep Blog

1/27/12
Time has past since our season ended but the bitterness from the end still exists. The only reason that is true is that our expectations were so much higher. 6 years ago we were an easy win, #5 seed in our district, 5 win season. This year we were ranked amongst the Best in the State by ESPN and were in the Top 10 for the Bay Area all season according to
Brighthouse Sports Rankings. Our program has come a long way and with the quality people and players returning we hope that we can remain a factor and improve our postseason performances.

1/19/12
Last night was an absolute battle and I couldn't be any prouder of my teams performance. Fighting back from 1-0 to take a 2-1 lead, having that lead erased in the final minute, battling through our second OT game in a row only to lose 9-8 in penalty kicks. We deserved a better result but couldn't have performed any better. The 2012 Senior Class will go down as one of if not the best class in our schools soccer history, currently has most wins and numerous individual awards. They will be missed in all facets of our program.

1/17/12
In a game that saw us out shoot, out chance and out possess Durant badly the score was deadlocked at 1-1 after 100 minutes. The 100 minutes of soccer were a gritty test and we never backed down from the challenge or stopped pressing for the winner. In the shootout, Brittany McNickle, Emily Belanger and Ashni Deschenes scored while Heather Montgomery intimidated 3 misses from the Cougars. Good win but tougher tests await.

1/4/12
Last night was a COLD night at Alonso but we managed to play some of our best soccer of the season. We also completed our district play with a 4-1-1 record, this earned us a tie for the #2 seed with Newsome. One regular season game remains versus King and we are looking forward to continuing to build momentum as we enter the playoffs.

12/18/11
2011 ended with our bench playing the 2nd half versus Plant and playing hard and only losing 1-0. 2012 is around the corner and as a team even though we were 0-2-1 in Sarasota we left feeling as though we solved some problems and made some improvements. Not scoring in those 3 games was not ideal but we did generate some opportunities and feel confident that Santa will bring us some finishing boots.

12/13/11
Senior Night was tonight and our 2012 class went out in perfect style with a 2-1 win over Plant. This senior class is very special to me as I feel that with the birth of my son we have evolved together, them as young ladies and me as a husband into a father. They have helped me in ways they will never know, and I will be forever indebted to the Class of 2012. I just hope we can keep playing forever and never say goodbye.

12/9/11
Newsome showed us that we have a long ways to go if we are going to compete for the District and State crowns. Our second match against Strawberry Crest started slow as we were tied 1-1 at half but our Senior leadership provided the pep we needed at halftime and the team responded with 5 unaswered goals.

11/18/11
This week featured two important games our rivalry game with Freedom and our first district match with Durant. The resulting two wins gave us bragging rights for Bruce B Downs and a good start to the district regular season. Durant: Emily Belanger usually a defender stepped into the midfield and scored the 1-0 game winning goal at Durant with 6 minutes left to earn the win.

11/11/11
Long 2 weeks finally comes to an end. An emotional win vs Steinbrenner was the highlight of the week. We worked through a lot of adversity and showed real heart as a team. Unfortunately trying to do that two days in a row with even more distractions occuring was to tough as we dropped a game to Plant City.

11/6/11
Our 5th Annual Wharton Invitaional proved once again to be a showcase of some of the best teams and talent in the area. The tournament provided us an opportunity to play against a Regional Semifinalist, State Champion and Final Four teams from last year. As we move forward the lessons learned this week will only help us be better in the future.

10/30/11
The Preseason finally comes to an end tonight at midnight and the games begin to count. This has been a much anticipated season for us as expectations have been raised by ourselves and others. The key for us this season will be to concentrate on working each moment and trying to improve everyday. If we can focus on the ground beneath us and not get caught up looking at the finish line then we may get the end result we desire. Here is the
St Pete Times season preview. Well enough talk and on to the games!
As always our Wharton Invitational that kicks off the season features some strong opponents as we have a defending State Champion, State Finalist, Final Four Team, and 3 Regional Qualifiers.

10/3/11
Tryouts next week.
The commitment to conditioning has showed some of our team stengths: unity and leadership. These two qualities will hopefully guide us to a successful season in respect to the goals that we will set.
Can't wait to get started!

2010/2011 Season Below

2/1/11
Not many would have picked us to be playing in February but we did. The belief and support that we had all season allowed us to conquer some postseason demons and open a new chapter in Wharton Soccer. The new chapter includes the expectation for excellence, experience in winning and tarnishes the image of also ran or non-contender. This season proved that we belong amongst the best in the State and the challenge now is to prove it again.

1/28/11
The Regional Quarterfinal was a test of character and we passed with flying colors. Even though we had carried play early we found ourselves down 2-0. A quick goal right after we went down 2 by Jessica Murray was the spark that ignited the comeback. From that point we continued to press until Fallon Vaughan equalized early in the 2nd half. As the game went on the inevitable approached, Penalty Kicks. Ashni Deschenes, Baylee Dozark, Brittany McNickle and Emily Belanger all converted while two St. Pete misses sealed the win.

1/21/11
District Final vs Bloomingdale, 4-3 win in PK's. Incredible win versus a tough opponent. The Bulls went up 1-0 with 12 minutes left, the Wildcats stayed poise and came back to tie it from a corner kick when Freshmen Laura Johnson skyed in the box to head a ball like a dart in the back of the net with just 3 minutes remaining. In PK's Heather Montgomery made 1 big save and Baylee Dozark, Ashni Deschenes, Emily Belanger all converted their kicks and when Bloomingdales 5th shooter missed Fallon Vaughan sealed the win. The first ever District Championship, 10th straight win! St Pete Times Article

1/20/11
District Semi Final vs Plant at Plant was a hard fought battle. The 1-0 win cemented the programs first ever trip to a District Final and the State Series.
St Pete Times article  Defensively we battled hard and when Fallon Vaughan had an opportunity she finished it with clinical precision.

1/13/11
As the regular season winds the team has gained some motivation from our recent winning streak and have been further dedicated to improving each moment in order to achieve our post season goals. Our district features 4 of the best teams not only in the county but in the state, the winner and runner up will have a serious opportunity at going deep into the State playoffs and we are hoping we are one of those two teams.

1/4/11
Our team had the honor of being the featured team in the Tampa Tribune during their prep coverage. Here is a link to that story.

12/18/10
Winning the Sarasota Tournament was a good way to end 2010. As we move forward into 2011 we need to use that positive momentum to help us finish the regular season and prepare for our playoff run.

12/3/10
As injuries have mounted other players have been forced to step up and provide more than we thought. Freshmen Laura Johnson and Casey Ferguson have filled in admirably as they along with former subs Monica Moore and Risa Brudney have inspired the shorthanded Wildcats to play well while gaining valuable experience. Freedom... our Bruce B Downs rivals, always good to beat your rivals. Gaither, the team played well but could not capitalize and that fact ultimately sealed our fate as the Cowboys were able to score the lone and decisive goal in a hotly contested match. Going forward, even more will be asked of the underclassmen and thier response will dictate the direction of the team.

11/20/10
Tough week that saw us start with 20 players and finish with 12. The break could not have come at a better time for us physically and mentally.

11/13/10
A week that held promise ended with bitter disapointment. A 4-0 loss at Plant after being in the game til the very end was frustrating especially with the 3 late goals but to lose to Bloomingdale on a shot from 40 yards out was even more deflating. This week showed us thta we are not as close to obtaining our goals as we thought we were and we need to work harder and be more committed if we are to achieve those lofty goals.

11/8/10
The Wharton Invitational gave us an opportunity to play 3 quality opponents in Hillsborough, Seminole and Newsome. Reaching the Championship Match and having that game go down to the final minutes capped of a positive week that the team should look to build on as we dive head first into our district schedule with Plant and Bloomingdale this week.

10/30/10
The Steinbrenner Preseason Jamboree gave us a pressure free opportunity to get our first games out of the way while trying to improve as the week went on. The feeling through the team was that which each half we felt more comfortable, confident and prepared. Next week begins the regular season with our Wharton Invitational which always brings great competition. Excited for another season, can't wait to get started.

8/5/10
As the summer winds down and the school year gets closer the anticipation for the upcoming season continues to grow. This year we will host our 4th Annual Wharton Invitational as well as compete in Preseason scrimmages at Steinbrenner and Sarasota Holiday Classic.
